M0 - Moof

The VanMoof M0, originally named "MOOF," was introduced in 2009 through collaboration with Dutch designer Sjoerd Smit and distributed by Areaware. As the first VanMoof bike, it featured an aluminum single-speed frame with iconic integrated LED lighting built into the top tube. Shortly after launch, the bike’s name was changed from "MOOF" to "No. 3" due to trademark issues with the original name. This model became known for its minimalist yet practical design, notably recognized for its integrated lights and simplified urban utility, laying the groundwork for the brand’s subsequent bicycles and establishing VanMoof’s distinct design language.

M1 - no.5

The VanMoof No. 5, launched in 2010, was the successor to the No. 3, building upon its predecessor’s practical and minimalist philosophy. The No. 5 introduced enhanced functionality through an integrated chain lock concealed within the frame, making bike security seamlessly part of its design. Additionally, it included a Micro-USB port on the frame, allowing easy recharging of its built-in LED lighting system. This thoughtful integration earned the model the 2010 Dutch Design Award for Best Consumer Product, reinforcing VanMoof’s growing reputation for combining elegant aesthetics with functional innovation, and marking an early milestone in urban cycling design history.

M1 - Dusenjager

Introduced in 2011 as a limited-edition variant of the No. 5, the VanMoof Düsenjäger (“jet fighter”) featured an anodized aluminum frame, Sturmey‑Archer two‑speed kickshift hub without cables, integrated USB‑chargeable lighting and built‑in ABUS chain lock. The model was awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2011, selected from 14,000 entries across 68 countries for its design quality and creative functionality. Produced in small quantities, it attracted attention for its aviation-inspired styling and clever design integration—making it a rare highlight in VanMoof’s early lineup.

M2 - 3.1

Released circa 2013, the VanMoof M2 3.1 advanced the M‑series with refined frame geometry, higher-grade welds, and improved components aimed at increasing durability for daily urban use. Importantly, the M2 line included a lighting system developed in collaboration with Philips, offering brighter, dynamo-powered integrated LED lights that operate even when the battery is depleted. While maintaining the minimalist aesthetics and smooth rideability of earlier models, the M2 3.1 marked a technical step forward in lighting performance and overall reliability.

M2 - 3.1 Vedett special edition

In 2014, VanMoof collaborated with the Belgian beer brand Vedett to produce a special-edition variant of the M2 3.1 bicycle. Technically identical to the standard 3.1, the Vedett edition differed through exclusive design elements and branding, prominently featuring Vedett's distinctive colors and logo on the frame. This limited-edition release highlighted a creative intersection between urban cycling culture and lifestyle branding, appealing particularly to collectors and enthusiasts who appreciated unique design collaborations. Due to its limited production and the popularity of the beer brand, the Vedett Special Edition quickly gained recognition as a collectible model within VanMoof’s historical catalogue.

M2 - Electrified 3

The VanMoof Electrified 3, introduced in 2014, was the brand’s first electric-assist bicycle, featuring a front-hub motor and battery integrated within the frame's top tube. It included front and rear Philips-branded LED lights powered by a dedicated dynamo hub, ensuring illumination independent from the main battery. The drivetrain featured a Shimano automatic two-speed rear hub designed for simplified urban riding. Following this model, VanMoof expanded its electric range with the Electrified S in 2016 and Electrified X in 2017, making the Electrified 3 historically significant as the company's pioneering step into the growing electric bicycle segment of urban commuting.

M4 - Smart S 2018

The VanMoof Smart S, launched in April 2018, introduced advanced technological features focused primarily on anti-theft and rider connectivity. The Smart S included integrated GPS tracking, Bluetooth-enabled rider recognition, and remote bike-locking capabilities through a dedicated smartphone app. This model introduced VanMoof’s "Bike Hunters" service, enabling stolen bikes to be tracked and recovered. Additionally, the Smart S was one of the first models offered through the VanMoof+ subscription service, marking a significant step toward subscription-based urban mobility. Its straight-frame design preserved VanMoof’s minimalist aesthetic, while substantially expanding the functionality, security, and connected capabilities offered to city riders for the first time.

M4 - Smart X 2018

Released alongside the Smart S in 2018, the VanMoof Smart X provided identical technological and connectivity features but in a compact, step-through "X-frame" design. Initially intended for the Japanese market, it quickly expanded globally due to positive reception. The Smart X offered integrated theft protection through GPS tracking, Bluetooth authentication, remote locking, and VanMoof’s Bike Hunters service, enabling bike recovery if stolen. The smaller wheel size and lower frame geometry specifically catered to riders preferring agility and easy maneuverability in dense urban environments, making it particularly suitable for smaller riders and cities with limited storage space, while retaining the technological innovations of the Smart series.
